While the past few weeks have seen many of fashion’s biggest conglomerates make multi-million-dollar donations to aid the fight against COVID-19, others have been figuring what they can do to help on a smaller scale. Whether it’s emerging brands pledging to redirect their profits to charity, or switching to manufacturing masks and gowns to support medical workers, the impressive response from the fashion community has been cheering to witness.
The latest initiative, spearheaded by luxury resale site Vestiaire Collective, is a charity sale featuring items donated by a starry line-up of stylish A-listers including Rachel Weisz, Thandie Newton, Claire Waight Keller, Bella Freud, and Charlotte Tilbury. All proceeds, including Vestiaire Collective’s commission, will be going to charities working on the frontlines of coronavirus relief, including The World Health Organization, France/Paris Hospitals Foundation and Madrid’s La Paz Hospital. “In 30 years of my career, I’ve never assisted to something like this before,” says Vogue Japan’s Anna dello Russo, who is selling items from her wardrobe in aid of the Italian Lombardia Region Fund. “Today, this pandemic transformed us into a militant audience. In my small part, I feel I need to do everything I can to be helpful for the people involved in the fight against this virus.”
For those on the hunt for the ultimate fashion insider piece, it’s sadly already gone: that would have been the leopard print jacket from the closet of Kate Moss, a beloved vintage item donated by the supermodel that is quintessentially Kate. Thankfully, though, there are plenty of other bargains to be had, from Balenciaga Triple S sneakers to Celine handbags—so if you fancy a little guilt-free shopping, get clicking before the next It piece disappears.
